Grinling Gibbons: Master Carver (1648-1721)
The carved festoons around the alter are by Grinling Gibbons who uses natural motifs such as shells, wheat, fruit and birds.

His craftsmanship influenced the shell work of Mary Delany-Doyenne of 18th century grotto designs and decoration. She regularly attended St James's church and a plaque commemorates her long life(1700- 1788).
