Shell House Talks - Gallery - Pena Palace - Sintra nr. Lisbon - Portugal

Pena Palace has 16th century decorative elements associated with MANUELINE architecture. Shell and coral motifs are particularly noticeable around the Gothic Merman archway. Inside the older monastic areas of the palace is the CLOISTER which contains a large scallop fountain and niche grotto decorated with mosaics and shell patterns. Outside in the Queen's Fern Valley is The Lake of the Shell, a retreat for the Hieronymite Monks. A natural water rill feeds the central pond and passes by the grotto decorated with "embrechados" overlaid with native shells. and volcanic stones.
